EXTRUDE SITE & SETBACK Within the site setbacks an extrusion 24m high was made to allow for buildings with a maximum of 4 floors. 2. STRIATE EAST-WEST A series of East West Diagonal Striations are made to create connections between the park and waterfront as well as to allow summer prevailing winds from across the park and river. 3. CUT VOIDS A series of primary voids are cut into the overall volume to define major public spaces, courtyards, and areas where the masterplan opens to the waterfront, park, and city. 4. CUT ROAD & WALK A North to South one-way Road, a two-way East West Road, and a 25m wide pedestrian Mall are cut into the overall mass in order to facilitate North South connections and to connect the project to the city as a district. 5. OPTIMIZE HEIGHT & MASSING The overall building heights and volumes are adjusted with respect to the size of each museum while determining strategic positions for each of the museums on the site. Heights and volumes of each museum were optimized in order to provide ample double height spaces for lobbies, atria, and galleries while creating a gentle undulating variation in the roof lines. 6. The first construction phase occurs in the center of the site and includes the Children’s Museum, the Central Operation Center, the Central Storehouse (which is partially below ground) and a portion of the underground parking garage and loading spaces. To the East lies the city’s primary park and “green heart.” The National Museum Complex occupies a threshold between these two spatial conditions on a greenfield site. Our proposal creates multiple “sites” within this newly formed site. The curvilinear Youth Park at the children’s museum and central storehouse is located centrally in the overall masterplan and provides a partially enclosed area for contemporary sculpture and a safe area for children to play away from traffic. As a platform for innovation and education, the building engages the site as a tool for display and active environmental engagement. Designed as a platform suspended over Nemunas Island and River, the building reframes the space between land, water, and sky. Void forms in the platform create windows to the ground, water, and sky. Solid forms house scientific event and research programs while creating an intricate network of linked vertical and horizontal public spaces casually interrupting large open plan galleries and connecting the platform to the ground. Located part on land and part in water, the building becomes a performative device not only to display scientific achievements, but also observe, measure, and test our impact on the environment. The project allows Nemunas Island to be completely repurposed into three primary programs and three landscape habitats: Science Center, Amphitheatre, and Arena; with Forest, Grassland, and Wetland - essentially turning the entire island into a scientific nature reserve with public pathways and programs. In the urban context, the siting of the building at the Southwest end of Nemunas Island allows the building to form a bridge between the Old City to the North and the future Convention Center on the South bank of the River forming a new cultural route through Kaunas. The bridge runs directly through the building utilizing its cores as structural support and creating direct linkages for pedestrians to the building. A second pedestrian bridge is aligned with Nemuno Street, bringing the Old City into the Island and the overall pathway network. The three landscape habitats will encourage the regrowth of native flora and fauna. A restorative wetland habitat is used to help cleanse the river of accumulated nitrates and phosphates. Due to the proximity to the river and the consolidated load paths, deep foundations in the form of driven piles are envisioned subject to geotechnical investigations. A steel space frame at the roof level provides a light weight superstructure solution accommodating long spans of the horizontal form while providing ample mechanical space. Floor beams and deck are suspended from the space frame with tubular steel hangers. The space frame will expedite erection and provide a cost-effective solution, reducing the weight of the building cantilevers.The project is comprised of four primary materials. Today’s library is as much a storehouse of knowledge as it is a place for social and intellectual interaction. The office building completes the framing of the plaza. Separate public and staff cafe’s open to a shared terrace on the first floor while offices are located on the second floor. The mechanical system of the building utilizes the geothermal heat on site and passive cooling from the river. A 300mm raised floor supplies efficient underfloor HVAC. The supporting plant rooms are located in the basement. The printed metal screen curtain optimizes daylighting and shades the building from excess heat in the summer. We worked to develop a formal and material language that would unite the interior of the winery, landscape, and new buildings. Inside, we developed a palate of timber lines and planes that would bring warmth and contrast to the existing concrete structural shell and allow display of wine, wine making, and cultural artifacts from the region. The city of Foshan is building a new cultural district around a lake and facing one of the many rivers flowing through the delta. The brief for the cultural district asked for four buildings (Theater, Museum, Convention Center, and Sports Center). The conventional approach has been the design of four separate buildings using a similar architectural language. In our proposal, we designed a terraced landscape that steps up the rooftops of the Convention Center toward the top levels of the Sports Center, creating a large community garden for the surrounding communities and businesses. The Theater and Museum buildings are then “planted” into this landscape, forming a triangular relationship with the tower across the lake and a gateway at the axis through the project. The stainless steel fins will have a bead blasted finish for a uniform appearance that diffuses the light without harsh reflections. Double glazed insulated glazing units create a high-performance thermal barrier for the project. Since the glazing is protected by the outer fins, the glass can avoid reflective, colored coatings so that a neutral indirect light can filter into the building. The Museum and Theatre buildings both use generous cores with multi-story trusses to create floating cantilevers which appear to float above the ground plane. Key internal spaces are designed as column free to enable future-flexibility and usability. The Sports Centre and Convention Centre buildings consist of rotated floor stacks which visually connects the overall massing. The ground and alluvial soil conditions at the site are generally expected to be poor. In addition, the high water table, from the presence of the surrounding water bodies, together with the relatively deep substructure excavation will result in high hydrostatic uplift forces acting on the basement slab. Internal heat is rejected through heat exchange loops in the lake and ground. Wetland buffers surround the project absorbing rainwater run off and storm surge while grey water is recycled for irrigation. Building facade elements are used to shade glazing, collect solar energy through building integrated PVs, and collect rainwater. San Francisco is in a housing crisis, while small inexpensive units are hard to find, so are houses for families. The Sunset and Richmond Districts could provide greater housing relief through increased density, but could it do so while still providing houses for families? Here, multiple grounds are constructed, creating a sense of terra firma for each house. Generous landscaped terraces extend the indoor living spaces to the outdoors. Flow through planters pre-treat the water before it is stored in a basement water reservoir and combined with grey water and treated for domestic re-use. Solar energy is collected on the roof and stored in battery banks in the basement for use with electric appliances and underfloor heating. Along with increased density for San Francisco 2050, we propose that at least 50% of water should be collected and recycled on site, as well as at least 50% of the project’s energy needs. Cantilevers and lateral bracing are achieved with truss framing that support the overall structure and provide additional lateral stiffness. Individual kitchen and bathrooms are modular, built in the factory in advance, and inserted into the structure. Large sliding doors open to terraces or balconies providing cross ventilation for the full floor housing units. In some cases, sliding doors and operable windows are screened behind vertical cedar battens for privacy, filtering direct sunlight. Corner lots offer the best opportunity for increased density without major disruption to the residential fabric of the area. These also provide prime locations for new public facing programs including shops, restaurants, cafes, and community spaces that help localize services within the neighborhood. The outer skin is a soft grey veil of wood, reminiscent of shingle style houses in the Bay Area. At times the veil is interrupted by terrace subtractions or large windows, other times running past windows in a delicate filigree. Inset volumes contrast the gray wood with naturally colored oiled wood. Wood surfaces wrap the interiors yielding warm, embracing spaces. A contemporary interpretation of the bay window pops out from the façade plane to allow light and additional space to bedrooms yet maintain privacy. A minimum square footage of 500 square foot is further established as a parameter / base unit to ensure a livable condition in a reasonably sized space for 2 people. This base unit is simply stacked to form a grid that could be easily manipulated to adjust to different living conditions. Two units could be combined, adjacent, above or below, to form larger 2-bedroom units or loft like conditions. This could be easily replicated in different corner lots and modified to provide different types of living spaces, while maintaining compact massing. The building is envisioned to provide housing for singles or couples or families with one to two young children. Smaller buildings would not only be more harmonious with the surrounding neighborhood but could also integrate more seamlessly into the community. St. Louis uses a combined sewer system, meaning in high rain fall events, the city’s water treatment plant cannot keep up with the amount of water coming into it. As a result, the city must by pass the treatment plant and pump untreated stormwater and sewer water directly into the Mississippi. The green areas surrounding the pathways are permeable surfaces meant to absorb storm water runoff and treat pollutants with biofilitration. Given the site’s iconic visual appeal we also think it can be the perfect signboard for Great Rivers Greenway’s environmental, adaptive reuse, and ecological initiatives. The existing billboard on the site can be “recycled” as a habitat for high flying birds of prey. The billboard’s high visibility will project the environmental mission of the project on a monumental scale - without a single word. Historic photos of the site could be studied and rail tracks could be restored as partial cast in place sculptures. Rather than treating these two streets as separate on and off ramps for I-64/Highway 40 we propose integrating them as a grand boulevard in the city. Connecting these two streets will have a profound affect on generating a culture of urban street life. Three of the on/off ramps can be decommissioned with minimal impacts to traffic and converted into bicycle lanes and pedestrian walkways that connect to the Greenways North and South. In the space between these pieces of infrastructure, we propose a one-of-a-kind Archeology and History Museum. There could not be a more powerful site to explore the deep history of St. Louis than at the Highway and the Mill Creek Valley Urban Removal Project. Artifacts and building remains could be collected, studied, and displayed together with work by contemporary artists and writers in St. Louis. Located adjacent to Saint Louis and Harris-Stowe Universities, we imagine temporary and permanent exhibitions. The work of Damon Davis, a black St. Louis based artist, is currently shown in one of the courtyards, and Hiwa K an Iraqi immigrant working in St. Louis is shown in the other. As an underpass, the gateway can be a source of security and safety for the park and immediate vicinity. The underpass should cross beneath Kingshighway to allow for seamless gradual crossings safe for cyclists and wheelchair users alike. Reconnecting Spring Street creates not only a pedestrian and bicycle route between St. Louis University’s North and South Campuses under and over I-64, but a spectacular overlook that celebrates the presence of the railyard with a view of the Gateway Arch beyond. Rather than relocating or removing this industrial heritage, we propose embracing it and integrating ecological habitats, pathways, and recreational experiences with artifacts of industry. Not only is this pragmatic and cost effective, it is also healthier for the surrounding city. Increased tree canopy will buffer the diesel emissions from train engines, improve air quality, and create shaded environments for recreation. Activating and illuminating these spaces at night will create safe routes for walking, cycling, commuting, community groups, and local neighborhood residents. Rather than treating the railyard valley as “back” of St. Louis, we propose making it a new “front” for engagement and experience. While most of this roadway structure has been removed, a significant amount still exists. The road gradually slopes up from 7th Street at Gratiot Street near the Wetland Bird Park and the Eastern end of the Southern East West Greenway along the railyard. The gradual slope is ideal for a bicycle and pedestrian pathway leading to a dramatic Mississippi River overlook. The existing warehouse buildings can be reused for housing and galleries as well as new residential buildings and development. The overlook can host festivals and events while providing access to a lightweight bicycle and pedestrian crossing over the Mississippi River to the Malcolm W. By changing the flood wall into a terraced levee, the historic waterfront warehouse district at Chouteau’s Landing adjacent to the Gateway Arch could become a new live/work and affordable housing district in St. Louis. The result could stimulate a return to downtown living and grow the downtown economy. We imagine hidden kitchens, artist in residence housing, hotels, parks, gardens, barbecues, an urban beach, and eventually, a public swimming pool overlooking the river all connecting to Great Rivers Greenway’s new riverfront trail while encouraging new adventures in the Mississippi. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/56b42b3907eaa08cb939e46b/1542864786197-5DM17BVT4J0ZJ578QDTK/Taishan+Aerial_OT.png Landscape This aerial photo gives a sense of scale of the project we are reimagining as a new ecological coastline on the South China Sea in Taishan. The perimeter of the reclamation area (pictured right) is approximately 20 linear kilometers (12 linear miles) and will be the site of a new city in the future. The dark green grid pattern along the coastline to the North shows the fish farms and agricultural areas beyond. Our project will be a considerable improvement over what is typically a hard edged sea wall. The future can respond to sea level rise with biodiverse habitats and occupiable waterfronts. For many years China has been buying Hong Kong’s construction waste. Like Hong Kong, the vast majority of this waste has been used for land reclamation. China is a large country but it lacks arable farmland, therefore many of its new coastal cities are built on reclaimed land to preserve the hinterland for agriculture. In its new environmental push, China has now stopped buying Hong Kong’s construction waste and has put a moratorium on further reclamation projects. This reclamation site is all built from HK construction waste mixed with gravel and rock.
